Yeah as someone who knows them from pop-culture exposure and not a heavy Joker/Harley comic reader, I thought that Suicide Squad made that very very clear...

She says she can't swim and he still drives the car into the river (lake?) and then leaves her in the car.

It seemed clear to me that he expects fanatic devotion from her, he can and will dump her if it saves his own life.

Even his 'rescue' of her seemed more like a show of his own power than for her benefit.

One of my friends described it as him "picking up his lost property" and that makes perfect sense to me.

That's a perfect way to describe it actually. He didn't rescue her because she was important/in danger (or how long was she in jail for that he did nothing about??), more like he went, "Oh hey I left a suit at the drycleaners (Harley in jail), I should go get that."

I haven't seen this movie, but the way they phrased this, I thought the OP meant they wanted to feel the self-sacrificial love that Harley feels towards the Joker? Is she willing to die for him in this movie? The secret doesn't mention a need for that sacrifice to be reciprocated, just that they want to love someone so much they'd feel willing to die for them.

Pretty sure the OP isn't talking about *being* loved, but loving someone else. i.e. they want to be Harley, not the Joker.
