Unfortunately I have trouble separating the two and they kinda melt together in my head. I'm not done with the books but read a lot about them when I watched the show, plus I've picked up on some things from fandom. But yeah, you're right that it's a better argument for the show.
I agree she's more possessive than devoted, but I still think there is some devotion there, even if it's primarily related to comfort and security. What I'm not sure is there is love. He loves her, or at least did (I can't make my mind up if he still does or if he just hasn't realised yet that he doesn't anymore). But I'm not sure if she ever loved him. He was convenient and controllable when they were young, making him her best target.
