Weren't they friends? At least, wasn't Arthur someone Ford knew? Why would Ford save a random other person when a guy he knew and liked was right there? (And didn't Ford bring Arthur to the pub and didn't just bump into him there?)

That's kind of the point of the book, an average Joe thrust into strange and confusing adventures in outer space.

And Ford isn't exactly the chosen one of the Universe.

That too.

I completely get that, but Ford doesn't save Arthur for the point of the book, he saves Arthur because he likes Arthur.

Ford probably doesn't think earth celebrities are that important. Arthur is his friend.

In the movie with Martin Freeman though it's explained by him saving Ford from being hit by a car.

Interesting that your mind went straight to celebrities. I only meant that he must have met someone more interesting than Arthur in his 15 years on Earth.

Yes, but Trillian had already left the planet at that point.

Arthur is so utterly, boringly normal in an Earthling way that that is probably exactly why Ford finds him interesting.

I love that half the time Ford seems to find Arthur annoying, but it's totally in that "OMG, I can't take you anywhere and You are my most annoying friend" kind of way.

Most of my friends aren't objectively interesting, or even interesting to me. I just enjoy their company and we have things in common. I don't expect them to entertain me with their interestingness.

Besides, if I could save one person, someone who seems interesting but isn't someone I care about doesn't sound like much help to me, whereas someone I like to be around sounds like a better choice.

My mind went to scientists first actually, but then I thought Ford probably doesn't think much of our silly hypotheses about space.

Interesting doesn't always mean valuable. Arthur may be boring, but Ford is fond of him, so he has value to him.

I always enjoyed the comedic effect that was the result of Ford saving Arthur. There is also the fact that they were friends.

His utter normalcy is sort of the whole idea, surely.

The universe is huge and weird and strange. Arthur is a man firmly fixed on the small and normal and well-understood.
