Domestic Fic

(Anonymous) 2016-08-24 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
What are your feelings on domestic fic? Do you like it? Hate it? Any specific kinds of domestic fic you want to see more of?

Recs also welcome.

I tend to really love it, if it's used as a way to get at the characters in a new light? I think some fics sort of embrace the domesticity as a cosmetic setting rather than a way of living, which is of less interest to me.

I love it as long as it isn't curtain fic (I think that is the name).

Curious what you dislike about curtain fic in particular (I see them about the same, and like both, so I'm interested what makes the one good and the other bad).

I thought that curtain fic was used for fics focusing on characters in their old age (sometimes death). If that is not what if means, then I am using the wrong word.

What, pray tell, is curtain fic?

I thought is was the name for fics of characters in their old age (sometimes with deaths due to old age). A lot of the pairings I like have big age differences, one immortal person, or one person with enhancements to make them live much longer. So those kinds of fics make me sad.

Oh man, yes...

I thought curtain fic was fic with a particular focus on very banal, quotidian details. Like buying curtains.

Oh. That is not stay I thought at all. D= If that is true, then I need to find out what the fics I am thinking of are called.

Edit: After looking around a bit, it looks like the Supernatural Fandom often uses curtain fic for stories about characters in their old age. So that is why I thought that!

Ahh that makes sense!

Language is fascinating.

I would kinda like to see fic where Sam and Dean are the new Bobby and Rufus; the old hunters who are known in the hunter community as the guys to ask about weird cases, but who still go out and kick some ass.

It really depends. I'm a bit picky about it, because the characters in my main fandoms, while compatible with domesticity, also have very important facets that are waaaayyy outside the realm of domesticity. So fics where it feels like the domestic setting is all the characters know or care or think about just doesn't sit well with me at all.

Domesticity as a respite, or as part of a hurt/comfort fic, or as a source of humor or day-to-day realism, or as a source of contrast in a fic about larger ideas, or as a source of characterization/character study/relationship exploring, are all things I'm very interested in though.

Yessssssssss all of this stuff

Re: Domestic Fic

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
YES. Exactly. I don't want to read about someone's morning routine unless it's used to illustrate a point. To contrast with a very weird and hectic life, or as a backdrop as they ponder whatever, or maybe it's the awkward morning after the first time.

I also like fic that show what normal life is like *for the characters*. I know what normal life looks like for me and I know from, say, the Bond films what a possible world-ending mission might be for him. But what about 'average' missions or when everyone's just hanging out at MI6?

I sort of like it if it's just the pairing I like in a cute domestic scene?

I dislike when it devolves in kid fic, or in case of superheroes, if people "normalize them.

This is my exact answer as well. Like I legit do not get mundane AU's of superpowered characters as a huge chunk of the reason why I like them is because they've got superpowers. But I guess I'm more in the minority with that line of thinking. :P

And I find kid-fic really meh in general.

I find it cute. Depending on the fandom, it's a nice respite from the crazy usual and it's nice to see how people would behave.

I have a red that I love, Martha/10 DW, but I don't havevtge link. It was on ff or on, I can't recall :(

I'm usually not into it (although I've had a few pairings where it was all I wanted to read, for some reason) but I really like it when it's some kind of Swiss Family Robinson kind of situation and they have to set up housekeeping in some strange place, or else they're going undercover as a couple and start enjoying playing house together.

I really like domestic fic. Especially, like... if it focuses more on doing the work of building a home and life? And things like food and building and making things and hobbies and building all of that stuff out. Rather than just cuddles and stuff.

I like it. It's a nice break from all the angst/action/smut that I read throughout the day. Especially the more fluffy "Curtain fic" or just two characters talking about their day while making dinner.

I love it, but I haven't seen much.

I'm a fan of this Ava's Demon AU (just four oneshots, I think there was more by a different author but I can't find them) even though it's cheesy. heh

Do you mind if I ask why? Just out of curiosity.

As short pieces of scenes yes, otherwise no.
