Re: Venting thread.

I could cry.

I'm the sort who may start a fic and then abandon it for years before coming back to finish it for real. Maybe I'll read through it again, periodically, but it takes a long time to actually get back to writing.

And there's one story that I *know* I've reread recently and I want to start working on it again, and I CAN'T FIND IT. I found one chapter of it inside a 2014 nanowrimo compilation document but all the meaty stuff I'd written before? Gone.

It's not on my external hard drive. It's not in my drop box, it's not on my desktop or my laptop. It's not on a flash drive I have. All I can think is maybe I saved it on a different flash drive and then proceeded to lose that drive. I just don't know and I want to scream over it.

I FOUND IT, I FOUND IT, I FOUND IT!

Well, about 90 percent of it (and it's possible the other 10 percent was only in my head). Turns out it was on my 10-year-old macbook that only a third of the screen works on. I think there might even be another document I've been looking for, but when I try to open it, the window pops up in the 2/3 unusable part of the screen and I can't seem to pull it over.

Huzzah! Do you have a desktop screen you could borrow and plug into your macbook to check and see if your other document is on there? Good luck, hope you find it.

I've got the screen but not the compatible cables. In fact, my laptop is so old that when I tried to buy a cable for this very purpose a couple years ago, the Best Buy guy sold me one he swore up and down would work after giving my laptop a cursory glance...and it was too new for my stuff. (And I was out $15 because I'd opened it, plus my Best Buy was 130 miles away and that wasn't a drive I wanted to make just to fight.)

Are you able to put it onto Google Docs or Dropbox from the old mac?

I'm glad you found it, though. There's nothing worse than losing stuff you really wanted. I found I'd accidentally deleted a bunch of stuff on my external (including the subbed copy of a movie that I have NO IDEA where to find again) and I've been salty about it for a week.
