I especially hate interpretations that say that Melkor was abusive and therefore that's why Sauron did the things he did.

Uggghhh this. I don't mind the idea of Melkor being abusive, but the idea that all the stuff Sauron did is because of Melkor's abuse is not only an incredibly lame excuse, it is just so....boring.

My thing with abusive Melkor is that I see Sauron as incredibly arrogant. I don't really think Melkor could have instilled such loyalty in Sauron while at the same time being abusive. It doesn't go against how I see Melkor's character per say, though I do see him as being awful to everyone except Sauron. But it does go against how I see Sauron's character.

But yes, it is a really bad excuse and very boring. And Tolkien rarely if ever resorted to boring characterization, so why do fans go there with his villains?
