I couldn't agree more.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree it's hypocritical, but I also think genre is important. Something in a very porny genre can have all the sexualization it wants. Something that's trying to be serious but unnecessarily goes into sexual, graphically detailed rape/sexualization is, at best, distracting.

Though for what it's worth, I think there is an important distinction when it comes to representation. If all the female characters in a series (which may be all of one, historically speaking) are uber sexualized/raped, I absolutely feel sexism is worth talking about. Women being underrepresented and disproportionately over-sexualized is a fact, whereas that's essentially never the case with male characters.

But yes, purely talking about sexual violence/rape/whatever, there isn't a difference between it happening to a male character vs a female character, I agree.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
See, if the series aimed at people who think ladies are hot, I have no issue with there not being hot dudes in it too. Sometimes you want some plot with your porn.

The disportionation amount is worth talking about it, however.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't like it, don't read it. Problem solved!

If SJWs followed that advice the world would be a better place

I think it's hypocritical to deny some women like it or complain it *exists*.

But I do think it's fair to bring up that (sexual) violence towards women is way, way, way more prevalent even in mainstream media.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-27 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-27 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. If OP thinks that the amount of female-audience-oriented/men-objectifying porn is comparable to the amount of male-audience-oriented/women-objectifying, or that there's even a tenth as much power and money involved, I have a bridge in Brooklyn at a bargain for them.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-27 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
Why would those matter? It's the thoughts behind them that are the issue.

Violent sexual fantasies shouldn't be portrayed in media- ever? Even clearly labelled media for adults?
That seems extreme and not really related to complaints about commonplace sexual violence in mainstream media franchises.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-27 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Part of me likes it when this stuff happens to men because women being victims of this shit is so normalized that it makes me ill. That's the difference, OP.

I sincerely hope you mean that you like it in fiction, because taking pleasure in seeing real people sexually abused is not a healthy thing

(Anonymous) 2016-08-27 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Well duh, of course I meant in fiction. What a bizarre/alarmist assumption on your part considering this is fandomsecrets and OP is talking about doujins and stuff.

Still not good. And you seem to think it's acceptable to broaden it for nothing but revenge.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-27 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
I never implied it was good or acceptable. In fact, it's entirely petty of me, but I wouldn't be feeling this way in the first place were society not so fucking gross and prevalent with sexual violence against women in media. Kallanda_Lee explained my feelings on the issue better than I did.

Part of me agrees with you, but another part of me thinks that what you're saying is tantamount to complaining that people talk too much about death by getting hit by drunk drivers when people also get killed by lightning strikes while swimming. Sure, you're just as dead if you get hit by lightning while swimming, and you ought to avoid going in the water when there is a storm, but the one is WAY more prevalent and caused by something WAY more socially promoted than the other. Sexual violence against women is normalized in a way sexual violence against men is not, and irl it happens a lot more frequently to women than to men.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-27 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
That's actually unknown because men are FAR less likely to report it.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-27 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
The other one is a widely used trope in mainstream media; the other is not. Note that male-rape is prevalent only in fanworks - mostly in porn - and you have to go looking for it.

People (mostly women) are tired of violence against women in media because it's so prevalent, it desensitizes viewers and sets a precedent that gets repeated again and again.
And it's pretty fucking annoying when, in contrast to male characters, a female character needs an interesting storyline or a background, it somehow always ties into rape. As if we can't sympathize with the character or root for her if she doesn't get raped or is at least threatened with it.

And yes, sexual violence towards women rings true to real life, but why is it that in a fictional piece of work, you can have dragons, the guys can gain superpowers... but women who don't get raped or groped? UNREALISTIC! Sacré bleu, won't somebody please think about the integrity of the story!

(Anonymous) 2016-08-27 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I one hundred percent agree with this comment; I'm gonna print and frame this comment and look at it every time I slog through yet another empowerment through rape storyline for women. Kinda adding onto the comment below, I feel like male rape fic that deals with the aftermath far more relatable and sympathetic than most women rape published media, and it burns me so much that each step from her attack to her recovery feels like a titillating Aesop.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-27 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know what the heck media you're watching but I'm almost 40 and I've gone my whole life without seeing anything with your presentation.

Stuff where male rape is laughed off as unimportant, however, that shit's everywhere.

I'm glad people are pointing out that sexual violence towards women is 'normalised' to some extent, in society, so it's just not the same thing, comparing it to the sexual violence towards men in fic.

Also I see it the other way, to the way OP is seeing it. I see it as fanficers actually pointing out that men can be sexually assaulted, ie bringing attention to it. Some of the best fics I've read that deal with sexual violence towards men work through the recovery process in a realistic way. I can't see how that can be a negative thing :)

(Anonymous) 2016-08-27 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
it's only "hypocritical" if the people who complain about sexual violence towards women are the -same- people sexualizing violence against men– most "SJW" types who criticize sexual violence aren't the type to simultaneously squee over hawt rape yaois. it's not hypocritical for a woman to choose to focus on sexual violence against women as a topic, rather than sexual violence against men, especially when one is far more prevalent and impactful on society as a whole.

men and women are absolutely both capable of having disgusting fantasies, but only one of those groups has enough social weight to have spent the past hundred plus years embedding those attitudes not only in pornography but in mainstream movies/entertainment. it's not intelligent or laudable to ignore societal context to make a "point" about hypocrisy.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-27 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
It's still the SAME attitude though.
