Re: Most Disturbing Agreed Upon Arguement

All kinds of religion; god exists; we should all do what god says.

I am not anti-religion, or anti-religious people. I don't think all religion is bad, or that all religious people are bad. But if we're talking about what argument disturbs me the most that is mass-agreed upon, it's "because God said."

Arguments and discussions screech to a halt there, when people who you were interacting with as rational beings suddenly switch channels. You can't argue logic against an inherently irrational stance, moreso if it's one that values and praises irrationality as believing with no evidence, or faith.

If it makes people feel better and gives their lives more meaning, that is not a bad thing. But it is profoundly disturbing to me to be talking to someone and then hitting that wall.

I don't think that's unique to religion, though. I think that's mostly human cognition. I suspect that, at some point, most peoples' arguments are going to get down to points that are irrational or at least arational. It's not like we're deducing this shit from first principles.

as a Religious Person(tm), I think that "bc God says so, no other reason" attitude is bad religion anyway, so

I posted below you and I agree but lots of people do it - not out of fanatical faith but because they're too lazy to think about it or just haven't bothered - and it's a very common agreed upon argument

It's somewhat more ok for me if they say "because god said and I agree because xyz reasons" at least theres some rationale behind it. Maybe they're more inclined to agree because god said so but that's not the ONLY reason. But so many people say "God said so" and dont bother thinking any further than that and can't give you any other reasons why something is right or wrong or good or horrible and that bothers me the MOST

+1

It's specially bad when what "God said" is actually what some religious leader said without even basing his words on anything that's considered as God's word in that religion.

Or take a text completely out of context.

My mum has a story about a minister who preached a whole sermon against a hairstyle based on a biblical verse that said "top [k]not come down". The actual verse was about the prediction of the fall of Jerusalem and how when a chance to escape became available, people were not to delay and leave without going to pick up a pile of belongings, and someone working on the roof of a house not come down if it would slow up their escape.

I tend to be of the mindset a couple others in this thread have said - "Because God said, and it's a sensible reason too".
