Re: Most Disturbing Agreed Upon Arguement
(Anonymous) 2016-08-27 12:14 am (UTC)(link)I am not anti-religion, or anti-religious people. I don't think all religion is bad, or that all religious people are bad. But if we're talking about what argument disturbs me the most that is mass-agreed upon, it's "because God said."
Arguments and discussions screech to a halt there, when people who you were interacting with as rational beings suddenly switch channels. You can't argue logic against an inherently irrational stance, moreso if it's one that values and praises irrationality as believing with no evidence, or faith.
If it makes people feel better and gives their lives more meaning, that is not a bad thing. But it is profoundly disturbing to me to be talking to someone and then hitting that wall.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-27 12:38 am (UTC)(link)It's specially bad when what "God said" is actually what some religious leader said without even basing his words on anything that's considered as God's word in that religion.
Re: Most Disturbing Agreed Upon Arguement
My mum has a story about a minister who preached a whole sermon against a hairstyle based on a biblical verse that said "top [k]not come down". The actual verse was about the prediction of the fall of Jerusalem and how when a chance to escape became available, people were not to delay and leave without going to pick up a pile of belongings, and someone working on the roof of a house not come down if it would slow up their escape.
