I actually love that Frodo failed and the quest only succeeded in the end basically by accident. It's so...human and such a gut-punch after the enormous buildup.

Tolkien said in his letters that it was essential to remember that *anyone* would have failed eventually with the ring, even if they were a good person, like Frodo definitely was. It's sort of reassuring to read a story that admits that bad things are always going to be around and can't be defeated permanently, we just have to try and make the best choices at the time when we're faced with them. Frodo and Sam didn't fail, because they got as far as they did, which the other characters we see faced with the ring wouldn't have been able to do. But they're fundamentally still people, not superheroes.

I guess as a Catholic, Tolkien saw Frodo (and Sam) sparing Gollum earlier in the story, which led to the coincidence of him destroying the ring, as grace at work rather than it being an accident. But either way again it's an imperfect human ending rather than a epic, heroic one.

Yes, this. Even those who resisted the ring's influence still wouldn't have thrown the ring into the fire. Those who actively resisted ever taking it I think actually knew this too (Gandalf, Galadriel, even Faramir). Frodo and Sam were both in their own way responsible for the Ring's destruction because they got it to Mordor. But even Sam, who only saw Mordor made into gardens when he had the Ring, still wouldn't have been able to take that final step.

And I love that. I love that everyone, no matter what race they are, is so very human in that way. Everyone is flawed and complicated. And the Ring is interesting because it is about desires and how even the best desires can be warped into bad things. I've always thought that was a very important message. Even wanting to do good things can end up badly if we aren't careful.
