I think a big part of why people don't appreciate/realize that is that most people aren't aware of the massive mythological backstory Tolkien set up for LOTR. LOTR is actually just a small part of his world-building and frankly one of the more normal parts, as it were. So people don't fully understand what's going on in the more trippy parts.

This so much. Although LOTR does have its strange bits, it is nothing compared to the whole of his mythology. And I don't think you can understand the world without at least reading the Silmarillion. I mean, LOTR and the Hobbit are still enjoyable reads and you can still get a lot out of them. But there is so much more beneath the surface if you understand more of the world they are set in.

Not to mention even the Silmarillion is not everything of the backstory - one would have to sit down with a complete set of The History of Middle-Earth set to start getting the full story, and even I don't have all those books (I think I managed to get four before they faded out of the bookstores after the LotR movies were first released).

Yup. And there are even different versions of stories as well. I'm in the process of working through the Histories. So much material.
