1. If you saw the fire light up, you'll know but

2. If you're genuinely concerned, having a box of baking soda* that's specifically on hand for "in case of fire" might be helpful? I had a small grease fire in my apartment (a while ago), and the baking soda put it out right away. I think it also works on normal fires, so you don't have to guess.

Plus, if it's a grease fire, clean cat litter can help soak up to oil that spilled. Though I haven't tried putting out a fire with cat litter, and thus cannot recommend it.

* ...or a small fire extinguisher, that works too.

tl;dr: Just use baking soda, don't even try water.

I agree with this - usually what is used to put out a grease fire will work on a non-grease fire as well.
