I totally forgot about that part! The pic was making me imagine him fighting the balrog naked.

I suppose his clothes might have burned off...I don't really want to think too deeply about this. :-P

See I saw it as the body he had first was actually destroyed. He's a maia, and he was embodied for specifically the role as an Istari. So my thought was that he lost his body, went back to Valinor, and then was sent back with a brand new body. My guess would be that he was naked at first in both bodies because Ainur have no need of clothes in spirit form.

That's how I interpreted it, yes. I wonder what Gandalf would look like in his spirit form?

That line of thought is very good logic.

Also, he was sent back to the same spot he died, so he was able to pick up Glamdring (likely dropped on the mountain).

I do recall that somewhere it is stated that he made it to Lothlorien and his new robes were given to him by Galadriel.

So, he had to climb down a mountain and hike to Lothlorien naked.

It's actually suggested that it was Eru himself who sent him back.

'Naked I was sent back -- for a brief time, until my task is done.' Sent back by whom, and whence? Not by the 'gods' whose business is only with this embodied world and its time; for he passed 'out of thought and time'. Naked is alas! unclear. It was meant just literally, 'unclothed like a child' (not discarnate), and so ready to receive the white robes of the highest.

- Tolkien, in a letter to a reader
