it's a song by "the vapors" (though i only ever heard the kirsten dunst version) and there's this thing where people claim "turning japanese" is a euphemism for masturbation

and then there's the songwriter who claims it was just meant to mean "turning crazy"

so it's either a sexual reference or a racist one. either way not very innocent!

I've also heard it's about getting high. I was never able to find or figure out how you were supposed to get that or masturbation out of the lyrics.

The masturbation thing: the idea is that just before you get off, your eyes squint up, making you look .... Japanese. So even if it is supposed to be a sexual reference, it's still racist as fuck.
