Agreed! I think he's a much better storyteller than writer, so the medium of comics was perfectly suited.

Yeah. In addition, I think that in Sandman he basically has all of the ideas that show up later in his writing - the modern versions of gods, mixed mythologies, juxtaposition of human/mythic, etc. It's like a distillation of all his ideas in one place, only without some of the flaws that plague his other work. It's the only work of his that I really love, and I own the whole series, and have reread it several times.
