It's funny that you described her as "not pretty" when the first thing I thought when I looked at that picture (before reading the secret) was "wow, she's pretty. I love her glasses!".

Idk if you've seen the show, but as someone who has, I also object to OP's insinuation that Barb or the actress is chubby. She isn't stick thin and she has very wide hips, but I wouldn't call her chubby.

I'd say she's a curvy girl, wearing horrible pants for her body type. It does make her look chubby compared to the other people in the hallway.

So OP, here's one guy you weren't invisible to. Unfortunately, I was a socially awkward, hostile little disaffected shit who was way too scared to talk to girls. So... sorry about that, I guess.

I think a very big chunk of the "guys wouldn't talk to me in high school!" thing that many girls speak of is because many guys in high school didn't have a clue how to talk to girls. The major exception were the very charismatic ones who became very popular, and they tended to go for the very charismatic girls who were also very popular, and both of those groups of people were also usually very conventionally attractive and played it up with how they dressed etc.

I had a boyfriend in high school, but I was the one who finally worked up the nerve to talk about our feelings that were apparently super super obvious to everyone around us for months beforehand lol. Outside of that and a couple of maybe-attempted-practical-joke instances I didn't know of any guys who were interested in me. In hindsight, just because I didn't know about it didn't mean it didn't happen. Teenagers, yo. (Granted, I was a pretty weird kid and didn't always present as super feminine...I wasn't ugly, but I was fairly oblivious to both fashion and pop culture, didn't usually dress super flatteringly, and wore my weirdness on my sleeve to so speak. And probably also intimidated some guys by being very outspoken and opinionated.)

tl;dr many high schoolers are socially awkward, hostile, and don't know how to talk to people they're romantically interested in which I think accounts for a bulk of romantic experiences/lack thereof in high school
