They coulda done a lot of things differently.

It's interesting because they just sort of... obviously didn't really care about trying to do metaphorical shit, the way a lot of slasher-type flicks would, which is an interesting choice for them to make.

But god, the idea of a teen slasher movie where all the characters are dealing with the idea of leaving adolescence and losing their virginities, while being stalked by a killer maniac creature that literally comes from the foreign, incomprehensible Other Side, which they themselves have to enter to find and ultimately understand and defeat it - heck, that's both a good plot for a movie, and one that has an obvious logic to it.
