I've used henna several times on my very thick wavy/curly hair with no ill effects! As anon said, it does weigh your hair down a little bit, but I don't think it does anything to the existing curl pattern, especially anything permanent.

I haven't used LUSH's henna bars; I always make it myself with pure body-art quality henna powder. To me the LUSH bars seem counter-intuitive. On the one hand, they contain moisturizing cocoa butter. On the other hand, you have to use boiling water in order to get the henna to release its dye, lawsone (and to melt the cocoa butter). TBH, I also have to wonder whether cocoa butter creates a protective barrier that prevents keratin from absorbing the lawsone.

My henna is from Mehandi (their website Henna for Hair has lot of valuable information, even if you buy elsewhere). I've dyed it 4 times now I think, and always got great results. My mix is usually only henna and lemon juice, although I have used strong black tea with citric acid (it's in most supermarkets as "sour salt") when I didn't have lemons. Mix it up, let it sit 12 hours, then apply. This is the only main drawback to henna I've experienced-- for the first few days afterwards, my hair feels kinda dry from the acid. I'd just do a moisturizing hair mask afterwards rather than deal with a hot henna mixture.

I'd be happy to answer more if you have questions.
