I'm an American who has lived in Britain, and I can say that their reputation for lousy food is, in my personal experience, entirely deserved. It feels like a deep lack of understanding of how food functions, just a piece that's missing, culturally. It's like being tone deaf; they can't tell when something's out of tune and it's impossible to make them understand. Sandwiches should have texture. Hot food should be served hot. Toast should not be placed on a cooling rack before serving. Seasoning is a real thing that exists. These (among others) are concepts that simply don't penetrate.

Some of the best restaurants I've been to were in the UK so you probably never found the right place to eat at. It's like judging the American cuisine based on culinary atrocities like Mac&Cheese, fast food chains and peanut butter & Jelly sandwiches.

homemade mac and cheese is NOT an atrocity!

Yeah, I'm sorry for wherever you lived but this is not the norm. At least we don't sell plastic as cheese though.

But you did make the gas station sandwich a national dish. So lets call it even.
