[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-08-30 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey all! Yesterday's discussion on His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik is still ongoing if you have any comments you'd like to make!

We are reading Graceling by Kristen Cashore for September!

Starting NOW, I am taking recs for October! Please reply to this comment with TITLE AND AUTHOR!

Um...hmm. I haven't kept a formal list. (Also I didn't run the book club when it first started)

If you suggest something that's already been read (fairly unlikely I would think) you can always just rec something else :)

You did take over the most recent batch of book club, right? Maybe we should start keeping a list of books that have been read since May, I think we started?

Let's see, working backwards...

August: His Majesty's Dragon
July: Para Handy
June: Dragon Thief
May: Maurice

is that right?

Who Censored Roger Rabbit was before Maurice, we discussed it in the very beginning of May.

Oh yes, thank you! So I guess we read a book for April too.

And wasn't there some other book about a dragon. A sequel to something else, I think...

No, I was wrong, there were only two dragon books, not three. Oops, sorry.

Yep, so far just two, and Dragon Thief was the one that's a sequel (to Dragon Princess which we read...I think in 2014?).

I'd vote for this, but I know I'd probably just cheat and re-watch the miniseries again instead

I didn't even know there was a miniseries. I'll have to take a look.

Given that it's October, perhaps Bram Stoker's "Dracula?"

Oooh, yes! I think that would be a great read for autumn.

The Lolita secret last(?) week reminded me that I planned to read it for ages but always chickened out, so maybe we can read it together.

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

[This comes with a whole army of warnings about rape, pedophilia, manipulation, perpetrator's perspective and probably more I can't name now, because I haven't read it yet.]

Bouncing of the above suggestion for Dracula, how about instead Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. Predates Dracula, but I'd guess a lot less people have read it, so it might hold more interest for more people?

I haven't read either of them and would be interested in both. Regardless of my own suggestion, I'd love something spooky for October.

Thanks for the replies, everyone! I'll collect all responses in a post for tonight (hopefully) or tomorrow, as well as listing novels we've read to date (with current book club - I probably wouldn't be able to remember them all from before this year, though if anyone else has a list I'd certainly add it).

I may also throw in a rec or two of my own :)

Oh yes, if anyone remembers what the earlier book club read, please tell us. I wasn't around then and I'm curious.
