He was created in the 40s by -- like many other superhero creators -- Jewish comic writers and artists. This was explicitly as a reaction to Nazi Germany's anti-Semitic rhetoric. There's a reason Superman (whose name links to a well-known German concept) has a lot of vaguely Hebrew-ish elements when it comes to Krypton and especially their language.
