Well, they are.

No, they're not. You cannot opt into being female any more than you can opt into being gay, black, or mentally ill.

So when do trans women get to opt into being males?

You cannot opt into being male either, obviously. It's simply what you are. A human being can be one of three things; male, female, or intersex, and no amount of surgery or outward gender performance will change that biological reality. Biology is real. Gender identity is not. Gender is a social construct.

So are roads, and yet no one is arguing that they have no influence over daily life.

We live in societies, which means that social constructs shape our lives. It's a basic aspect of how societies function.

That's all well and good but there's a problem when males start demanding unconditional access to female-only spaces because they think that not having "masculine" personalities somehow makes them female.

I'm a cis woman and I hate hearing people talk like this. I don't consider myself the Grand Gatekeeper of Womanhood and I don't think anyone else should either - and your callous dismissal of the actual experiences of trans people is pretty gross (sorry to everyone who hates the word "gross").

You're not "cis". There's no such thing as "cis".

You can, however, opt into being a jackass.
