I hate them too. Of those three Nick's mother at least had a somewhat understandable reason for disappearing and coming back, but Cora's backstory was probably the most idiotic one I've seen on screen.

Remind me what the deal was with Cora? I just now remembered she existed and can't remember anything.

She ran off to South America when she was 9-11 (forgot which) by herself after their house burned down and no-one noticed that there was one body missing. And since she was basically a replacement for Erica, they didn't bother to give her a distinct personality, so she was easily forgettable and served no real purpose plotwise.

And Derek discovered he wasn't the only one left alive in his family! But then he never talked to her?! And then she left.
