Even if you put it in the text that a character is black (or a member of another minority group) the studio making a film of it might decide that this is going to be A Leo Dicaprio Part and that's what will sell sweet tickets and make them money.

This is why they option novels and buy scripts instead of giving authors casting approval, generally.

If you're JK Rowling and you've sold THAT many books, you probably have some measure of clout, and in cases like that enough readers know that x character looks a certain way, so they're going to cast a black actor (or whatever) but if you've just told a good story, they're going to cast who will put the most butts in seats.

I do think it's changing, since diverse leads and casts like 2Fast do really well at the box office and on television now. The audience is clearly there.
