[Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries]

♥ You can't be the rich, stylish lady detective, but you can be Phryne in other ways--do things that scare you and care for those you love and support other women and always learn about things that interest you. It's less exciting, but no less important.

(But don't wear a garter dagger without a sheath. That's just ridiculous)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-01 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that those things aren't nice, but... I doubt OP was daydreaming about being Phryne because the things she does are important or worthwhile. They're probably wishing to be Phryne because being a rich stylish lady PI sounds like a shit ton of fun.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-01 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well yes, OBVIOUSLY. But living a little more Phryne-like is something to encourage

(Anonymous) 2016-09-01 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I guess. It just seems odd that someone expresses a wishful fantasy type secret and the first comment is chiming in to let them know that while the fantasy is impossible, they can still do [a bunch of stuff they might already be doing already and anyway has nothing to do with the wish fulfillment part]. It's well meaning but a bit, er... not sure how to put it.

It's like if I said how much I really wished I could travel to Paris but I can't afford it and you said well, you could always take a nice walk in the park with a baguette, because walking is fantastic exercise! You're not wrong, but I'd still feel a little miffed like you're trying to squelch my dream with more mundane practicalities and it's not the time or place.

You could also get a Louise Brooks haircut.

And even wear nicer clothes instead of sweats and T-shirts. Granted, they won't be vintage designer or whatever, but there are reasonably priced garments that look stylish and make a lady feel good about her looks.

I'm new to this show and it's growing on me, is there a good fandom for it?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-01 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends what you want out of the fandom. It definitely skews older and more educated than most fandoms I've been in (and with a lot of women who have discovered fandom for the first time), the fic quality is fabulous (if very, VERY Phryne/Jack heavy), and even having been in it for awhile I'd still say it's a really supportive, pro-women fandom. Mostly. You do get the occasional Jack Stan going "Oh, Phryne is so selfish and doesn't deserve him" (mostly on ff.net) but it tends to be countered with rational arguments. I really like it, but if you're into (say) kink fic it might be too tame for you. (But there's mroe femmeslash than slash, which is a strange novelty!)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-01 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, thanks! That sounds like a nice fandom!

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
It really is. And it's a nice size--small enough everyone "knows" everyone at least in passing, but not so small that it feels impossible to join. And people are super friendly and encouraging!

(Anonymous) 2016-09-01 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Be awesome in your own way. Heck if you know how to make clothes there are patterns out there for that style. And you can always study detective work!

Being an actual detective isn't fun or glamorous like being a TV detective, though.

I just want to say I think you have cool dreams. :-)

It seems like most of my daydreams involved being someone I never had remotely the chance to become (aside from time travel, getting sucked into an alien universe, and having a sex change, sometimes all three).

Obviously you can't just decide to become a rich P.I. but she seems like a cool person to want to be like.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
I hear you! And I'd settle for being merely a stylish rich lady.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
What's stopping you?

If there's anything that this show, Agatha Christie or Elementary has taught me, it's that with enough practice anyone can become a professional sleuth.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. Good point.

Alas, fabulous wealth is hard to come by these days.

(Stylishness is a learned skill in great parts, so that one at least OP can do.)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, but what about the part where OP is rich?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Just stopping in to say that I love this show and it always makes me smile when I see secrets for it pop up here <3
