Canon but not Fandom?

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-09-01 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any things you like but aren't at all interested in fan sorts of things like fics, art, speculation, or other discussions?

I'm mostly this way about Criminal Minds. I really just want to watch the show. I do look online for spoilers, but that's about the extent of my fandom involvement. It is one of my favorite shows, but I like it or what it is and am not interested in it apart from the actual show.

Most of the things I enjoy, honestly.

For me, fandom tends to be most appealing at the intersection of "thing I like" and "thing with a lot of missed potential". If there aren't a lot of blanks to fill in or dangling threads to speculate and fic about, I'm not likely to be actively fannish, even if I follow a series/author/whatever religiously.

I think I'm sort o the same. But not in the sense of "missed potential," more in the sense of "a lot of room to explore and create." Like, Criminal Minds is set in our world. There isn't really much room for exploring outside of canon. The fandoms I've been into most have been Harry Potter and Tolkien because both of those have left a lot of room to explore (with Potter I think there is a lot of missed potential as well as a whole world to explore, with Tolkien it is just about getting into the characters heads and thinking about things that happen between canon bits and things like that because it is such a big world to explore).

Yep. I have to feel like there's something I want but aren't getting in the source.

All movies, like Star Wars, Disney, Marvel universe etc. At best I might save some fanart if I see someone I already follow posting nice pictures, but that's it.

Most of my fictional loves to be honest. Some don't have much in the way of fandom (or none that I've found). I agree with the person who mentioned an intersection between what I like and what I feel has a lot of missed potential and, I'd add, untold stories.

Re: Canon but not Fandom?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-01 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really. Like... there are plenty of things that I like that don't have fandoms (or have fandoms that are totally orthogonal to what I'm interested in) and I'm fine with that. But I would be interested in fandoms for those things if they existed, or were more in tune with what I cared about.

I think there's a pretty direct relationship between how much I like a thing & how interested I am in fanstuff, honestly. And the specific fanstuff can vary from fandom to fandom - sometimes I want meta, sometimes I want fic - but if I like a thing, I'm usually going to be somewhat interested in more.

Harry Potter. I always think I am interested in it but I'm not.

All the superhero shows. Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, Agents Of SHIELD. I have some headcanons and stories I like imagining but I have no desire to seek out fic or anything else.

Doctor Who, for me. Usually I either watch something and that's it or I'm into the fandom. I might wander in and out, or it might vary in intensity, but still, fic and speculation and spoilers, etc. DW is the only one where I do actually consider myself a fan but I don't really engage with the fandom.

Most things actually. Okay, tat's not true - I tend to like meta for most things, but like the fanfic/shippy stuff is for the minority of my fandoms.

Like 90% of the video games I play, honestly. And 100% of the TV I watch.

It takes something very specific for me to get into a fandom. I just have to fall head over heels for a story, the characters, and my friends usually have to, too, or I won't have anybody to discuss it with.

I'm only mostly in fandom for shipping so if I really love a show/movie but there isn't a pair I ship then there's a good chance I won't go looking in the fandom(this isn't always the case but it's the most likely one).

But for specific things I'm not even slightly fannish over:

Grimm.
Dead Space(I like the canon couple but not in an 'I must read fic' way).
Borderlands.
And I very casually enjoy Star Wars, I like the movies but I don't care for any fannish stuff for it at all.

About 90% of the things I watch/read I don't do fandom things for. I don't really have a specific criteria for why or why not, it just happens that way.

For me, that's essentially most Disney stuff as of late. I love that stuff but I don't wanna get into the fan stuff like art and fic and speculation.

Honestly, anything that involves real people actors. So all movies and TV shows are out. I love certain movies and TV shows, but I do not want to get involved in the fandom at all. Video games is where my fandom love lies.

I think I'm a case where if I am interested, I will have some fandom involvement, but it will be occasional and not heavy into the active community (though given that a lot of the active community is on Tumblr and I'm not, I won't get involved in that anyway).

The best example I have is also a kind-of reverse of what you've asked - I watch GoT reviews, recaps, theories and explanation videos, read the wikis, read fic, but I don't want to watch the show or read the books.

Buffy. Forever, Buffy, it is literally my favourite piece of media and playground to create headcanons in but holy shit do i not ever want to see or read anything else anyone has written about it. The canon is that flawfree.

(yes, the fact that most people would probably shit just reading that statement is a big part of the reason I'm not interested in touching Buffy fanon.)

I'm mostly that way. I used to make an exception for porny fics/art, but I haven't in a few years.
