You could approach your instructor(s) and inquire (non accusingly and without sneering at Pirates of Penzance) that you noticed you were assigned that instead of a more classical piece and you were wondering if there was anything particular about the piece you needed to pay attention to as you're learning it.

Good point--I'm sure she wouldn't have assigned any of us the pieces that she did without thinking that each one has something important to teach us.

Glad to help. I can understand how something like this might be disappointing, but assuming your instructors aren't assholes, there might be a good reason. And honestly, even if they're assholes, it wouldn't help for you to stomp up and demand why they gave you an inferior piece. Asking for their input and insight on why they gave you this one might give you a leg up. Good luck!

Oh gosh no, the instructors are definitely not assholes--and I wouldn't dream of pissing and moaning to them about it. Your advice is the best course--and thank you for the good wishes!
