I think I need a new doctor

(Anonymous) 2016-09-01 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Last year, my doctor (actually an NP) put me on birth control to deal with irregular periods. It seemed okay for a couple months, and then I got The Period From Hell. I mean FROM HELL: insanely heavy bleeding for a solid month, crazy pain, fever, exhaustion, the works. For a month I couldn't move around without blood clots going everywhere. It was disgusting and painful. On top of that, the BC started giving me daily migraines.

I told my NP, and she shrugged and switched me to a different birth control.

Six months later, I've just learned that I have ovarian cysts, and she told me, "If you experience any really heavy bleeding, especially with a lot of clots, or an unusual amount of pain or high fever, call us right away or go to the emergency room because that's a very serious sign." WHY DIDN'T YOU MENTION THAT WHEN I TOLD YOU ALL THOSE THINGS WERE HAPPENING?????

So....I should probably find a new doctor. But the EFFORT D: Plus, I'm moving out of the area in a year, so I'll probably just stick with this practice until then and go to specialists for the serious stuff. I just needed to rant >:(

When you picked up your prescription, it should've come with a booklet all about the side effects and symptoms. Usually pharmacies make you sign something to certify that you don't have any questions about the medication you're going to take. Yeah, your doctor should've warned you, but you're also under some responsibility to research what you're taking.

I research everything I take. My problem isn't with the prescription, it's with the doctor dismissing serious symptoms (which were *not* side effects of the medication).

If it was that bad for that long, why didn't you seek help or advice sooner? If I were you, I would've gone to the ER.

Also, next time ask to see the doctor rather than the nurse. It's the doctor's specialty after all. And you should especially see a doctor if your body literally sounded like it was falling apart.

I apparently should have, but nobody I talked to (friends, mom, doc, etc.) seemed to think it was very serious :/

Next time, listen to your body first! You know your body better than anyone else.

And I hope you do feel better soon. ♡

I understand where you are coming from. I went to get care for what I thought was a UTI (peeing all the time and odd/infectious smelling pee), and all they did was check for a UTI and say it wasn't it instead of exploring the symptoms. Turns out they are the symptoms of kidney stones as well. Apparently I passed a smaller one then, as the pain wasn't horrible, but a couple of years later I had a bad one (that I didn't get treated, because at that point I had no health insurance), and a couple of years after that I had one so bad I was hospitalized twice and had two surgeries. If they had explored everything years before when it was milder, I wouldn't have had those later experiences, and I'm still resentful about that.

I hope you feel better and that your health care problems get resolved.

It's not really that much effort to get a new doctor (if you have insurance). Go to your insurance's website and find their list of providers and/or ask people you know if they are happy with their doctor, then call those places up and ask them if they are taking new patients and accept your insurance. Then set up your first appointment, boom, done!

Did you bring up the fact that you'd reported those symptoms to her earlier?

Yeah, you should probably start seeing someone else.
