It really drives me nuts when I get into a good series and then realize that OH, the author has decided that one side is EVIL and one side is GOOD and that's just all there is to it. I was really disappointed when JKR kept hammering on about that, too.

Dude, me too. I understand the need to make certain stories allegorical, but people need to realize that it just doesn't WORK that way in the real world and that if your book's audience involves adolescents, there shouldn't be much of a need to soften these ideas (especially seeing as the Harry Potter books have a lot of death and torture in them and THAT isn't softened at all). There's no set "good" and "evil" and oftentimes what truly is evil isn't ugly at all (like Voldemort is, haha), but aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

...No wonder people are always caught up short when they discover that someone has an ugly personality even though they might be pretty in real life. D:

I remember getting into an argument with an RP mod about having a slytherin that wasn't "HOMG EVIL INCARNATE WANTING TO KICK PUPPIES"

I finally gave up and quit. Srlsy, the grey areas are much more fun to play in.

Haha, RP mod = sadness. D: You could be Machiavellian and Slytherin, but not necessarily evil and Slytherin, which makes for more interesting characters, I believe. Which was why I liked how JKR handled Draco, at least.

I admit to liking Snape since book one. XD; I am generally suspicious of disliking a character that all the other characters already hate, not because I'm adverse to being another one to join the h8 club hahaha, but because I feel it's too easy to hate characters in general and more of a challenge in seeing something good about about a character that nearly everyone construes as a waste of space. (Long winded, but hopefully my point makes sense. ^^;)

I wasn't even going that complicated. My character was a douche, she just didn't want Harry head on a platter.

No, I know exactly what you mean. Specially with Snape.

Even Rowling made sure that people know that Slytherin does not mean evil.

Slughorn and Andromeda(Tonks's mother) were in Slytherin.

This MAY have been before book six, but even still, it was a ridiculous argument. (Then again this same mod let her friend ban_set my character 2 days into the game for, IC, calling her Mary Sue a bitch)

Actually, I liked the way that she emphasised how the "good" side made mistakes, were arses, could be just as bad as the "bad" side, how the "hero" could be an anti-social sarcastic bitch with trust issues and still have his heart in the right place, an so on.

I also liked how the "bad" side comprised maniacs, a psychopath, some social climbers, some lost souls, and some only in it for the power.

Of course, since a lot of readers seem to be fooled by the surface (the imagery, the opinions of some people on the "good" side, the usual patterns of fantasy books that they fail to see how the books often veer from), I see a surprising amount of readers convinced of their own analytic prowess who manage to miss even the more obvious clues.
