9 - Okay, you know what, I've already seen multiple comments being all fake 'oh poor you'. But you know what. Having people constantly asking you if you 'eat enough' or teachers back in high school assume you're anorexic (without talking to any of your friends) because all they see is a skinny kid (they got me in a meeting, I swear. Luckily I just burst out laughing at them). Or constant comments about how people 'hate you' because yes, skinny and pretty. IT'S GOD DAMN ANNOYING. And other then the 'I hate you' comments, can seriously start to damage your sense of how you look, because all you hear is that you're too skinny. OH CRY MOAR. I know, but it's upsetting at times. So I get where you're coming from.

It's not PC to make fun of people who are fat, so why are we fair game for the guilt trips too sometimes? Either, you work for it, and you deserve it, or your body is naturally that type, and again - why should you have to feel bad about it?

Sorry. My weight, while 99.9% of the time I don't think about, is a sore spot when I see people be assholes about it.

Agreed. The constant judging of women's appearances is revolting. I wish people would stop commenting on and caring about what other people look like.

I didn't realize so many people were so "oh crai moar" about that secret and it kind of makes me ":/" too. It's just that annoying double standard you mentioned.

What has the world come to, where you can be the target of abuse for actually MEETING society's expectations for beauty? XD

Tbh, it's always been that way for women.

If we don't meet the standards we're called ugly bitches and shut out of everything.

If we do meet it, we're assumed to be airheads, sluts, or annorexic and treated like it.

Truest of the trufax :(

Word. Plenty of naturally thin girls I know have gone through the same thing and it makes me angry.

I used to avoid going to the bathroom by myself after eating because some would call me a bulimic when I did and think I went in there to throw up. So I understand what you and the OP mean. It's a fucking double standard we have. No one should have to feel bad about what they look like, whether it's size, hair, ethnicity, or what the fuck ever.

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-04-11 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I had a friend in... er, the equivalent would be high school, I think, who had weight problems because of heightened metabolism. She was a bit underweight (though not extremely so), and otherwise healthy, and with a bit of a complex about her low weight. Just because a person is skinny doesn't make it all right to pick on them.

What's the deal with "skinny and pretty, though? It's not like one necessarily follows the other...

(original commenter)

Well, for me I get both from people. But that's what the stereotype is, right? Skinny and pretty. That's what we're told we should want to be so often. They definitely don't always go together, but I guess since it's told and shown to us that you can't be pretty without having a skinny type body.

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-04-12 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
To me, "skinny" conjures up a body that's a bit too slender, like a teenager who's grown too fast in too short a time sort of way. Isn't "thin" or "slender" more flattering?

The ideal is of an extemely thin body here too, of course (there is no escaping in the modern world, I suppose), but the connection to beauty doesn't really strike me as something obvious.

Thank you. I don't think it's fair to have different standards about weight. I'm underweight, and I get a lot of that 'are you anorexic?' shit. Because it's okay to give a thin person a complex about how much they weigh, and it isn't fair to do it to a fat person?
