38. What are you going to do when LOST ends? How about reading all the books that inspired the show and the books that were mentioned on it as well? Then you can get every reference on the show. "Oh, okay, The Heart of Darkness, I get it now."
There's a page somewhere mentioning all the books but off the top of my head there's;

Second, it was from this season in the episode "Eggtown". (Where we see Kate on trial in a flashforward.) Ben is locked up in his house when Locke comes in with a book and lunch. Ben looks at the book and says that he has read it already. The book was from his own collection. Locke tells him to read it again. That he might have missed something the first time around.
I've never read the book but by judging from your reaction, it's good? I might check it out next time I hit the library.

I read VALIS for a college class in Gnosticism, which was ~10 years ago so my memory is poor, but I remember it being simultaneously very interesting and very hard to follow. There are two characters who may or may not be the same person, Gnosticism is the key to everything, Philip K. Dick may or may not have been having a schizophrenic episode while writing it, etc. I'd say it's worth a go, though.
I don't watch Lost regularly, but from the little I know, it doesn't surprise me that those two characters have read it. :)
