As a fan of Utena and a member of the forums, I think it's kind of funny that you'd say someone could "get it wrong" when analyzing Utena. Isn't one point of the show about being open-ended and being able to make your own assumptions? That being said,I agree that Gio (I assume you're talking about her and not Yasha) has a pretty overbearing tendancy to Akio worship, but I still found a lot of her essays to be really interesting, and not totally off-base.

Anyway, I still hold that IRG's the best active Utena forum around, so...

I know the series is open-ended, I love it for that, and my issues are more some of the conclusions she comes to about the characters. Yes, I know, how you interpret a character is pretty much as open-ended as can be. XD But the mark of a good essayist IMO is that you either convince the reader or at least provide enough evidence to make a decent argument. Her assessments of a lot of things are oversimplistic and sometimes just...downright offensive to me. Trying to condense this as much as possible here:

Akio is sexy, and any woman who 'denies' this is just kidding herself and can't deal with liking a villain. (I could care less if she likes him, for the record, but don't tell me I'm wrong for disliking him because I 'can't handle it'.) Saionji fans - the real-life ones, even - are natural submissives draw to their need to nurture him, with a future in BDSM. Wakaba completely deluded herself not just about whether he gave a damn about Anthy but about his 'true nature' (she seemed to base this on, like, one line. that wasn't even translated the same way in my fansubs.) Utena isn't just naive, she's an idiot and as innately selfish as the rest of the duelists because she's casting Anthy in the role as her princess. While Akio is forgiveable, Anthy is just plain 'malicious' because she's passive-aggressive sometimes.

There are aspects to what she writes that are true, too, she just delivers it with this absolute sureness that she's telling you this important thing about the series. And then works it around to conclude that most of the women are stupid or wrong for their behavior, while the men do worse and they're 'hot', and readers are just in denial if they feel differently. I sound wanky as hell, I know, and I have no idea what her personal life is like. I just do reserve the right to be irritated by it, and I doubt I could talk to her on the forums without getting into a lot of arguments. XD
