I was wondering that myself. Like, what is it? How do I know if I am popular looking? Is it how you dress or how you wear your hair or make up or what?

Apparently, if you aren't fat and look pulled-together and somewhat cheerful, OP can instantly divine that you are/were popular in middle and high school, and popular = bully as we all know.

That's a laugh, because I was the shy nerd who didn't have any friends in junior high and high school. I was a late bloomer socially and I didn't become comfortable with myself until I was in college.

For a lot of people, college is when you find your tribe. I think it's also important to get away from where you grew up at some time or another, because back home everybody has already pigeonholed you and is ready to remind you, at every turn, of who they've decided you are allowed to be.

This gave me some more pieces as to why my relationship with my former best friends went toxic in college. They moved out of town and basically isolated themselves from everyone else. I meanwhile started hanging out more with my fellow students and involved myself in my club and hobbies. (I was doing this in some part while we were in the same town, but less time with them = more time for that.) I had a chance to take in different perspectives and develop as a person, and they stagnated. Seeing how they had a lot of influence over me before this... well, no wonder our friendship went more and more toxic.

Fortunately the distance also meant that once all contact was cut, I didn't risk running into them.

I imagine it's people who dress like the people who were popular did* when the OP was in school (and bullied the OP). People who radiate self-assurance are often popular types.
