I’ve got a story in my head that I’ve been thinking out for months. I'm not a writer, so this will never get written out but will live in my head indefinitely, but here goes.

This could be set in any universe (canon or AU) involving spies, on the small, independent, underground scale (more like the Nikita scale rather than the James Bond/MI6 scale).

3 main characters: Anne the agent; Henry her handler; Bob their boss. Anne and Henry are independently excellent at their jobs, and when they work together, their results are A+++ so everyone assumes they are sleeping together, but they are not — they are strictly professional in their relationship and are just super professional in general, unshakably loyal to The Agency. (Anne and Henry work with other handlers and agents, too. But not as well as they work with each other, of course. Of course.)

Loooong story short, the Big Reveal or the Emotional Crux of the story is that while both Anne and Henry are strictly platonic badasses at their job and follow the Agency's orders to the letter, Anne's loyalty is not actually to the Agency -- it's to Henry. Now, since Henry always carries out the Agency's will, Anne following Henry's orders has always been indistinguishable from Anne following the Agency's orders, so no one has ever caught on. Not even Anne or Henry.

Until they do. Or one of them, or someone else (like Bob their double-crossing boss?), does. Cue the drama.

(Currently, the drama in my head involves Anne being set up by Bob, because Bob wants to use Henry for his own evil means but has learned that Anne would be in his way, and Anne is formidable. And Bob is the one person among the three of them that knows just what Henry means to Anne, and that she would do anything he asked her to. Somehow torture and heart-breaking amnesia will be involved because of course they will.)

I'd read it.
ginainthekingsroad: 3 separate yet equally important groups- the police, the DA, and the goddamn Batman (Law & Order Gotham)

This sounds like it has a little in common with a miniseries from a few years back called The Game. I would have liked The Game more if it were more like your concept, tbh. Would definitely read/watch what you describe.

I just freaking love spy series. Spy AUs generally terrible though.
