What fictional men are multi-talented (and aren't Gary Stu's)? For example, Dean and Sam don't really seem to have any talents aside from being hunters.

SA. The fact that John Watson on BBC Sherlock is a doctor and a crack shot supposedly because of the army irks me. It's cool for the character but it's not at all realistic.

Paraphrasing:

"You know, I killed people when I was in the army."

"You were a doctor."

"I had bad days."

Yeah, NO.

What? Why? I know two doctors (dads from school friends back in the day) who were in the army and one of them still has a weapon license and regularly goes to the gun club's range for practice and even used to hunt.
How do being a medical doctor and being a good shot exclude each other?

Army doctors are more likely to be a version Hawkeye Pierce than John Watson. Many of them carry weapons only under protest. And most of all, people are not fictional characters. As I said in my first comment above: "What might be realistic IRL may come across as unrealistic in fiction."

Whether you agree with me or not on any specific character is irrelevant. The anon above is obviously enjoying the self-righteousness of their accusation of sexism but if I found out that James Bond did still lifes in oil in his spare time I'd be rolling my eyes.

I love the character (or did when I read the books years ago), and he definitely has many flaws, so I wouldn't consider him a Mary Sue, but Gabriel Allon is a fictional spy who is also a master art/restorer, so similar to your James Bond who paints oils in his spare time. It does happen in fiction.

Wrong, in a word. All British Army specialists from cook to band piper are combat trained, and many in non combatant roles are crack shots.

/ex Forces brat with a crack shot Dad not in combat role.

Isn't that line in particular about him fucking up a surgery?

I can't tell if this comment is facetious.

I mean they teach you how to use a gun when you're in the military.

I was always partial to the idea that John wasn't an Army doctor, he was a soldier with a medical degree. As in, he signed up as a soldier, and he also happened to be a doctor.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-05 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, why are you calling out the BBC version specifically? John Watson has literally always been a doctor and a crack shot because of the army. Like, it's right there in the first story.

Han Solo is a linguist, mechanic, general, pilot, and a host of other things.

Captain Picard

Batman

Captain America is a talented artist as well as a superhero.

Heck, I'm pretty sure even characters like Homer Simpson who's main character trait is 'screwup' has been shown to be shockingly talented at tons of things.

this is honestly one of the stupidest comments I've ever seen on FS

are you trolling or are you really under the impression that male characters each have only one skill? or that writing a person with multiple talents = Gary Stu/Mary Sue?

Dean's a good cook, and Sam's smart (and dedicated) enough to have gotten a full ride at Stanford.
