Audiobooks: Happy Fiction Stories

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-09-04 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I am looking for some novels (that have audio versions) that are upbeat, happy novels. Any genre is cool except romance or straight fantasy. I like urban fantasy but am not really into LOTR/GOT style fantasy (high fantasy?).

They can have a bit of sadness (since conflict is often necessary in stories(, but overall I am looking for something to listen to that at work that won't depress me.

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (and all subsequent sequels) by Alexander McCall Smith

a lady detective (in Africa) starts her own business

Bloodsucking Fiends, You Suck and Bite Me by Christopher Moore

the first book is *kinda* about romance, but actually not romantic, like, at all - it's more about poking fun at romance?
it's about a woman who becomes a vampire and finds not being able to go outside in the sunlight inconvenient

Question, how do you feel about YA novels?

Also, how do you feel about, IDK, "middle" fantasy?

I like YA. And it just depends on the story.

My forever favs are Patricia C. Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles. Blessed be Full Cast Audio, though the actress they picked for Morwen in book 1 was all wrong.

Book three has cats, and they all have their own voice actor/personality and it's gr9.

You're welcome! The books are sort of a pastiche of fairy tale stories, without being a send up of specific stories.

To give you an idea of the type of humor, the first chapter is "In Which Cimorene Refuses to Be Proper and Has a Conversation with a Frog".

Could anyone rec me some early-era Clex? Especially close to canon or episode related? (Why do I always fall for defunct fandoms...)

Supernatural fanfics which explore Castiel's angelic nature.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-04 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm tired of fanfics where Castiel is sort of a nerdy human. Any fanfics where Castiel is very non-human? Especially from his POV. Thanks in advance!

I would suggest going to supernatural fic finders on lj. Best fic finder community that I know of.

You must have been relieved to see this thread, since otherwise the lack of Supernatural secrets would have denied you an opportunity to reiterate your opinion.

I could maybe dig up some links, but it's been years since I read SPN fic and I'd be doing on memory alone. Your best bet might be to hit up the deancastiel comm on LJ, go into the archives, and look for fics that were actually written in late S4/early S5, before the whole nerdy human things really set in.
