It'd be a ridiculously soft sell as a "gritty violent Western drama" especially with a name as famous as Cormac McCarthy behind it, but...

If somebody actually wanted to do it right, yeah, that'd have to be a passion project.

Well, I mean, I'm not sure that the Cormac McCarthy name is that famous. I'm certainly not sure the studios think so. I think they see the projects you mentioned as Paul Thomas Anderson, Coen Brothers, and Inarritu projects, you know? So unless you have someone of that caliber...

Are they... illiterate? He's a Pulitzer Prize-winning modern American legend and his books (All the Pretty Horses, The Road, No Country for Old Men) are household names. At least among households that read books. Which are probably the only ones going to films like The Revenant and whatnot in the first place.
