I hated The Breakfast Club because people who were older than the characters have, ever since, acted like "This is teenagerhood. This is what you identify with." Frankly, I never saw myself or any of my friends in any of TBC characters. I hate reductive depictions of high school. Also, I'm technically Gen X by a hair's breadth, but I'm still 10 years younger than these characters would be and I was not a teenager in the 80s. Maybe it's time to stop referencing this movie when talking to teens and college students, who were nw born in the late 90s and early 00s, as if this is somehow still representative of youth culture and will make you sound as if you're "with it."
