Okay, I don't know this show and I need more context to this post. "Sewing as a hobby"--is that meant to be less difficult than "sewing a button back on"? Because I don't sew as a hobby at all but no one ever showed me how to sew on a button--honestly, it seemed self-evident after my stepmother showed me how to thread a needle. Do people honestly think it's difficult to sew on a button?

Yeah, I've never put into words how much "sew on a button" as a benchmark for sewing skill gets on my nerves. Invisible zippers or something, that I get.

Yeah, it might be more of a benchmark for not being a complete slob.

I went out last night for dinner and a movie with this guy I used to see a lot of. Was unpleasantly not-surprised to observe that he was wearing a shirt that was covered with old food stains and gaping open over his belly where a button was missing, revealing an undershirt with a cigarette hole in it.

No, it's not difficult to sew on a button. AYRT's point is that some small needlework like sewing on a button or fixing a busted seam is a skill you might expect someone travelling a lot to have - needlework as a hobby (making your own clothes, embroidery and the like, making more difficult stuff) isn't.
