I liked it. Maybe I had different expectations going in. Maybe it's because I read it at the age of 31. I don't know.

I liked that at the beginning, the main character is traumatized by his grandfather's murder and seeing a monster no one else can see in a way that really negatively impacts his life. I liked that discovering magic and monsters exist didn't immediately result in awesome adventures, but locking himself in the laundey room and getting sent to therapy.

Yeah I loved the voice & was hooked before the magical adventures started.
