I have a similar habit, except I save the pages or (more recently) clip them into Evernote.

In my opinion, sharing the fic with other people after the author removes it is the point where you'd become an entitled asshole.

Only if you do it unprompted, otherwise it is no different than circulating out of print books. There is nothing wrong with sharing a deleted fic with someone else if that other person asks for a copy.

AYRT
I feel like there is a difference between sharing deleted fic and circulating out of print books. Most notably, out of print books have a limited supply, while fic is easily copied and may end up spread far further than intended.

Actually, if we're comparing to physical books, out of print books are probably closer to fic that was hosted on a now-deleted site (or distributed via alternate means to the ones used currently, eg zines).
Deleted fics are more like recalled books, like copies of the Bible that typo the Ten Commandments (except far less exceptional historically).

Either way, I'm still going to err on the side of "don't distribute deleted fic".

I should do this because some fics I bookmarked have been deleted. But damn, that is a lot of fic I would have to download. Plus, when a fic is deleted I have no idea what it is, so I often don't miss it.

Also, I wish Ao3 had an easy way to find fics that have been deleted so I can remove from from my bookmarks.

Doesn't AO3 have built in fic download options? (I don't know if authors can choose to disable that, though.) So it'd be easier to back up your faves than having to copy/paste chapter by chapter, at least.

I'm way too lazy tbqh

(Anonymous) 2016-09-05 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Every year I find more clever ways to archive fanfic, but I'm fickle and only do it the fandoms/pairing I like at the time. HTMLs are the best but despite the crass name "FanFictionDownloader 0.8.11" gets the job done even if the program is wacky.

Any suggestions for saving fic wattpad though? Anyone?

Save As HTML only should work.

I don't think this makes you an asshole - but if you're broadcasting it or telling the author you did it then that's a dick move. (I'm assuming from the secret you don't do this.)

Also, I like the way your secret is formatted.

I get it, I do the same thing with fic I really, really like because I know I'll want to re-read it at some point. I don't however post it somewhere else online, especially if it's been deleted, because that would be a dick-move. Keeping it for your own purposes however I feel is fine.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-05 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
This is my attitude, too.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-05 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
As an author who has deleted several of her fics, I support this 100%. All I hope is that you don't share them with other people or-- worse-- repost them. You're hurting no one by keeping a copy for your own reading pleasure.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-06 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I have no tolerance for this when it comes to AO3 because the author has the option to just orphan the fic. The fic stays up and the author doesn't have to be associated with it anymore. Straight up deleting it just seems like a dick move.

This this this.

People in two of my fandoms are republishing as original fic by changing names and some details.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-06 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
There are valid reasons why this might not be a good option for the author, though. If someone intends on reworking a fic for publication, even an orphaned fic floating around on the internet that sounds similar could cause them problems down the road - even if they could prove authorship, which they probably couldn't seeing as how it's disconnected from their name.

i wish that more people knew about orphaning a fic. AO3 makes it so easy

I used to download fic. Mostly because the computer I read them on didn't have internet so ye olde floppy disk helped me out.

Now I don't read enough to be bothered.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I was as wise as you, OP! I mainly use my phone to read fics, and also has a lot of tabs with my fave fics open so I can reread it whenever I want without searching. So I lost a couple of fics I really loved to re-read this way. I still regret it so much, if only I saved them instead of keeping it in tabs!.. *SIGH*
Also I completely understand authors need to do that. One of my deleted favourites was a fic with a lot of really silly porn, like, there was animated slime-cum-blobs, dick-hardening mist, magic and stuff. I saw people talking and making fun of it on tumblr, then someone mentioned it to BNF, and a couple months later fic was deleted. I still loved it though, I could never write like that, without a care, the stuff was maybe silly but still hot and interesting, dare I say... inventive. :)
So yea, I need to learn from you. I'm still too lazy to actually save my favourites, I should change that.
(Now I regret I never commented on that fic. Sure it was somewhat 'bad', with all the silly porn going on, but I still liked it... maybe if I commented the author wouldn't have deleted it...)
