you know, back in the day (gets out cane and dentures) when someone said "I wish there was more fic of X" within fandom circles, it was usually taken as a challenge by authors who were dry of plot bunnies and hunting for a new idea. where the hell did that concept die off and how can we bring it back?

I mean, I say this as an author writing fanfic of a rarepair who is, literally, the only author writing it currently on AO3. In fact, after someone here on F!S expressed a longing for more frottage fics in any fandom, I made sure one of those was a frottage fic.

Right? A kinkmeme is basically a bunch of people going, "Wouldn't it be cool if there was a story about __________?"

Or hell, I see people on Tumblr all the time who say something like, "I saw a post about soulmate AUs so I wrote this thing!"

MORE KINKMEMES

but also other stuff because kinkmeme to me just implies sex or sexy content, and sometimes I really get a boner for completely gen fic.

Kinkmemes have more gen fic that they used to but there is still not enough gen fic. There will never be enough gen fic. :(

That is what I love about kink memes and plotbunny communities - they are places to drop ideas for other people to consider. I was in a plotbunny comm for a while in the Transformers fandom, and I spent a while on the Hobbit kink meme and got some of my ideas picked up.

I don't think the concept's entirely gone away, as there are still memes and prompts and challenges and whatnot. I think in some circles there may just be a backlash against that section of fandom that can, from time to time, get fairly demanding/judgmental about fic.

But yeah, I'm in your boat. I love "I'd like to see X" posts; they give me ideas and keep me writing!

the anon way above me who suggested meta posts and such as encouragement or offerings of plot bunnies to writers sound like a good idea to me. I'd be down with that.

Agreed! Sounds like a good solution that would make everyone happy (well...okay, not everyone, but a decent chunk of both writers and readers).

I think there have been some crossed Social Justice wires where when people are specifically asking for more diverse fic, there is an implied - or sometimes outright - criticism of those who do not write diverse fic. I've seen that happen.
Obviously many people who wish there was more X fic aren't demanding it nor are they being entitled or trying to guilt people into that, but I think there's a bit of association with that sort of thing happening here.

I hadn't specifically thought of that, but I think you're right.

My first thought was asking along the lines of "I wish there were more a/b/o stories about these two characters." where people are free from judgement to think anything from "I don't!" to "Hmm, that's an excellent idea. I am in the mood to write some intense knotting, thank you random citizen!"

But now that you mention it I see a lot of "Ugh, why is everyone obsessed with whitecock when they could be writing about POC genderqueer asexual lesbians and be a good person instead of a shitlord?!" too.
