I tend to think it could be any of the above and depending on the situation might be two or even all three.

Generally when I've experienced stuff like that it's been along the lines of "you should be more normal/hip, why don't you conform?" either because the speaker actually pities me, or because they feel insecure/uncomfortable that I'm not normal by their standards. And honestly, fuck that.

Do you have any specific context here, or were you just asking a more generalized question?
