Well, maybe they're urging you to "let yourself be [whatever they think you should be," when it's they and not you who want to do or be that. But on the other hand, sometimes it's evident that a person wants very much to do something and is being passive-aggressive or a self-made martyr about it. Maybe they want the appearance of being persuaded to do it--that way, they can avoid taking full responsibility. Maybe they would like to do something for themselves, but they also want to appear to be unselfishly putting others first.
