If you can read Cyrillic characters you already have a leg up. I managed to navigate the subway with my dad just on being able to read place names, but I don't speak Russian.
But yeah, I've heard about things like pickpockets and such, but on the other hand, Russia does get plenty of tourists, especially to the big cities. If this is really OP's dream, I'm sure there's a way.

I also feel like you could say the same thing about the US both in terms of crime (in some parts of pretty much all big cities) and "always gearing up for a war". But tourists are generally pretty safe here.

At the moment I would not feel uncomfortable traveling to Russia for a visit, though if an actual war were to break out that would be different.

If you can read Cyrillic you have a leg up, but if someone sees you writing Cyrillic and it's not cursive, you become a mark, according to my friend's uni prof.
