This was my home town too, and it wasn't even in the Midwest. There was just the one public high school in the township, and I think there might have been two Black kids who went there in the four years I was there. Of course there could have been Catholic families who sent their kids to St Albert's and then to Archbishop Ryan or Archbishop Wood.

And there are still towns like this in the US. I lived in Upper Michigan for a year in high school, and the school had a total of one Chinese kid and two African-American kids. According to Wikipedia, the city is almost 95% white, with no one minority of a greater percentage than 1.7%.
