Hey. Can I ask you some questions about Russia? My sister and I are trying to decide on our next trip.

Sorry for such a late reply! Just got off work.

1) How safe do you feel in Moscow (especially late at night)?
2) Do you think it is fairly safe for 2 women walking around alone?
3) What are your favorite places to visit?
4) What is the food like in restaraunts?
5) How expensive would you consider if for a tourist?

That is it for now.

1) I'm a 20 something girl with a slight sociophobia and a good inagination.

I feel safe walking around my home at night - I might hop off to the shop at 3 a.m. with no worries. (in Moscow many shops work 24h. I have 2 food shops and one apothecary working 24h near my home) That is if I'm walking no farther than 5 mins from my apartment. My apartment is in a good area though.
I feell safe walking until 1 a.m. on the well lit streets if I'm not alone there - subway closes at 1 a.m.
I'm not comfortable walking in parks after about 10 at night. The same goes for areas with old building - that's to say poor housing areas. And areas with construction sights and factories.

I asked my friend and she says that Moscow is like a Mixico City but better. Depends on the area. The very city centre (Tverskaya, the Red Square) is safe the whole night. Moscow never sleeps.

Oh! And if you go to the country (villages around Moscow) or a forest or an unkept park have a paper spray with you, against stray dogs.

2) Why not? Statistically there are more women than men in Russia anyway.) It's not Saudi Arabia. If you're gay don't kiss on the streets as you never know if there are bigots around. =_=

3) I don't really visit tourist attractions in my native city. I'd suggest Pushkin Museum, sometimes they have interesting installations and Bolshoy Theatre for instrumental music.

4) Some restaurants are better then others. A lot of Japanese style food chaines that have sushi and such, they're well known and you'll see a lot of them here. Traditional Russian style food chains - Му-Му (cheap and is a buffet), Елки-Палки (I'd say also cheap). Грабли is a buffet and is nice for big groups. Food courts in shop malls is another option. Usually you don't have to make a reservation in a restaurant, there's always free tables.

I don't like fast food but McDonalds and Burger King have free toilets. Pizza is so-so. I'd advice against street food and buying alcohol in small shops - the quality is questionable. I use Subway sandwiches chain and Крошка-Картошка potato chain for something on the go.

I'd google some traditional Russian food to try if I were you. Pelmeni, borscht, kvas... There are some Soviet stylized restaurants geared for tourists too.

5) Hotels may be expensive? You might look for hostels. Idk really. Ruble's gone down a bit however Moscow isn't cheap. Saint Petersburg is a bit cheaper. Also traffic jams are maddening in the mornings and the evenings. In the Winter you'll have dirty snow and even more traffic jams.

You could say thank you even if I wasn't much help... I liked your messages on FS and now I feel disappointed. Humanity is dead to me.

Oh dear. I wasn't ignoring you! I have this page bookmarked. I sent it to my sister to look over and was waiting for her to reply. Plus last week was a long one for me because I had to make up hours from work, sometimes repling slips my mind. I apologize.
