Honestly, after seeing all the slash art and proclamations that "Keith and Lance are so gay!" "look at the way Keith looks at Shiro, so gay!", I was downright disappointed with how the show is actually completely devoid of any slashy implications. There is nothing there for any potential ship, not even queerbaiting. The fandom has quite possibly the worst case of "they stood next to each other, they're so in love! XDDDD" yaoi goggle delusion that I've ever seen.

I was so surprised when I realized pretty much everyone and their grandma shipped Klance, because watching the show I was all like "lol, look at those dudes competing and crashing their lions like losers, they're totally gonna be bros one day, yeah, look, now they're bros... kinda". Never once did I pick up on anything that could be considered romantic, especially with Lance trying to pick up women and Keith being "meh, bleh, ???" about pretty much everyone and everything.

I mean, I understood that people were going to ship Keith/Shiro since there was face-touching and wobbly anime eyes of surprise and sudden emotion, and that's really all it takes for a gay ship to set sail. But the Klance genuinely surprised me.

I like Shiro/Keith so I'm biased, but I've heard the same sentiment from people who don't ship anything in Voltron - as in, they don't really see much gay potential in the show but if they were forced to choose, then they can at least see where the Shiro/Keith shippers are coming from just based on episode 1. I was never into rival shipping and I'll probably never understand the appeal behind the whole "they argue all the time because they secretely loooooove each other!" dynamic but still, the fact that there is such a huge gap in popularity between Klance and literally every other pairing is kind of baffling.

Ships based on this always make me think of my mother trying to make me feel better when the boys at school bullied me. "It's okay, they probably get nervous and don't know how to act around you because you already have breasts and the other girls in class don't yet." Bullshit, I say. Bullshit.
