I'm sorry you're not having fun.

But on a certain level, yeah, cry more.

It sucks getting into a fandom when you just want to read gen fic but everything is shipping. I feel your pain.

I always see women complain about this, but I feel like women are the problem here. The only fandoms I've been in where there were decent amounts of gen fic were very male-dominated.

Okay?

An entire gender is not a monolith- I'll guess the women complaining are not the ones who ship.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but they also aren't writing any fic. That's why I like fandoms that at least have SOME male writers. It usually means I'll get some sort of gen.

tbh there is gen everywhere, it just gets very little love, and I think that's part of why it's written less.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I disagree. I'm in some fandoms that are fairly popular with dudes, and if I wrote gen fic, I would probably get a good amount of reviews. If you're in a fandom that's dominated with women, most women prefer shipping fic over gen fic, so it makes sense why women would shy away from writing gen fic in those fandoms.

I know people like to be gender neutral about this type of thing, but there are usually different fandom trends with men and women in general.

I think it differs. My experience in male dominated fandoms tended to be almost no fic at all (but interesting meta).

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I guess it does depend on the fandom. I also feel like I was being sort of unfair with what I was saying. I think women are definitely capable of writing good gen, but I think they feel discouraged sometimes without at least a decent sized male audience (the people most likely to read gen). In one of my fandoms that has a decent number of both male and female participants, the easily most popular fic with over 4000 favorites is gen written by a women. The second most popular fic is gen written by a man, but it doesn't have nearly as many favorites. The woman with the most popular fic relies on both a male and female audience to leave her lengthy reviews and give her favorites. It's very encouraging.

Now a woman who writes a long romantic slow burn fic for a female dominated fandom is probably going to have mainly female readers. She doesn't rely on a male audience at all. I can understand why she wouldn't bother with gen in that fandom unless it was some sort of oneshot.

I think it's sort of unfortunate. I definitely think gen writers should be encouraged more in female-dominated fandoms where gen tends to be more rare.

I think u mean straight women.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Lesbians Love Genfic?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
No, I meant women in general.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I never feel bad at all when m/m slash fans who don't like f/f get into one of the few fandoms where f/f is dominant lol

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Where did you get that OP is a slash fan?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not an unreasonable supposition tbh

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
If anything the secret would have made me assume they're a het fan (because Kevin is boring, hence they're not interested in shipping him with any of the female characters).

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Well, frankly, I feel the same way about het fans too.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Well there'd be a lot more f/f fans in all fandom if the ones there are now didn't all act like you lmao

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

I am like... 95% confident that has no effect whatsoever on the amount of people in f/f fandoms. I'll be honest, I don't think anything that AYRT says is going to effect which characters people in fandom want to have sex with.

I don't ship it, but that art is cute!

Also, I don't think it's necessarily true. Next to the MCU, Star Wars was always my other big fandom, an I never really shipped anything there.

Shipping is fun, but not the end-all-be-all.

Oooh, I love the art in this secret it's so cute. I happen to ship this, and Holtzman/Patty as well, but it can definitely be disappointing when you don't jive with the rest of fandom so I understand where you're coming from.

See, I never understood the need for shipping. Except for one or two shows, I never ship, I much prefer team and action.
Sometimes I anti-ship though, which can be annoying when they throw some pairing in your face. But that's mostly because I generally dislike the main character of many shows and love some minor character waiting to be killed off. (Bitter much?)

White, straight female, for anyone who cares.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-10 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
So.... anyone know where the nsfw art is at for these two?
