Yeah but if a reporter had made the connection and posed the question, I feel like it would have been worse for him to deny the fact that he took inspiration from the case.

It doesn't sound like the connection is obvious enough for a reporter to have made the connection.

Isn't that what reporters do for interviews? Research their subjects for potential juicy topics? Normal readers wouldn't pick up on the connection unless they also happen to be familiar with the case, but interviewers are more likely to dig up things.

No, it's pretty obvious. BTK is a very, very well known serial killer and his capture was one of the biggest crime stories of the 21st century. It'd be like writing a story about a famous black football player accused of murdering his wife and hoping reporters don't make the connection.
