I haven't seen the new movie, but isn't it less an alternate universe in the "parallel universes" sense (like the Mirror Universe) and more in the "diverging timelines" sense (like Back to the Future)? I think Sulu's supposed to be the same age or older than Kirk, so the differences in his character should be environmentally driven, not innate, because the divergent event would have happened after he was born.

Second one. But to be honest they've never been strict with it.

Ah. I'll be honest, I haven't watched them either. Most of what I know comes from osmosis. Though, that said, if the divergence is supposed to be only since the Narada came through from the future, what happened with Khan? Did Marcus give him plastic surgery with the new identity? Because otherwise that's a racial switch from 200 years prior to the Narada.

Cumberbatch Fever happened.

I meant canonically. If it's meant to be the same Khan and 300 years previously he looked the same as he does now, then the divergence between universes is much bigger and we're well into parallel universe territory.

The comics said that there was indeed post-thaw plastic surgery involved to make him look more northern European because of reasons, but that was after the fact and probably in response to fandom's collective WTF. Honestly, the movie just expects you to accept that the Indian guy is being played by a White guy instead of a Mexican guy now.
